Safe Cribs for Missouri

Safe Cribs for Missouri Program

The Safe Cribs for Missouri program provides portable cribs and safe sleep education to low income families who have no other resources for obtaining a crib. The program is administered by the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) through federal funding from the Maternal Child Health Block Grant (Title V) and state funding from the Children's Trust Fund. The overall goal of the program is to support families and reduce the risk of sleep-related infant mortality.

The program is implemented through Local Public Health Agencies (LPHAs). The LPHAs participate by:
• Initiating referrals for eligible families
• Providing the initial one-on-one safe sleep education to each family before the crib is received
• Providing a follow-up safe sleep education session in the home 4 to 6 weeks after the crib is received, or when the infant is 4 to 6 weeks old

Eligibility Guidelines:
• Client is a Missouri resident who is 35 weeks gestation to three months postpartum
• Client is eligible for WIC, Medicaid, or has income below 185% of the federal poverty level
• Family has no crib and no other resources for obtaining one
• Family agrees to participate in two safe sleep educational sessions, with at least one session provided in the home
